Two PhD students present their PhD projects:

  • Anastasia Shanaah: "Re-politicization of exhibitions of contemporary Arab art exhibitions."

The goal of this research project is to provide a systematic, empirical and theoretically-grounded account of the re-politicization of contemporary Arab art exhibitions. It is predicated on the empirical observation that Arab contemporary art exhibitions that were not intended as political by the “production” side of exhibition can become politicized on the level of the “reception” side. Hence, there seem to be multiple pathways through which exhibitions become politicized, but the existing literature deals almost exclusively with the intentional pathway. This research project attempts to systematically compare cases of politicized Arab art displays and analyse their differences with regards to different entry point of the political dimension, in order to uncover all possible patterns of politicization.

  • Louise Rognlien: "The imagery of the Muslim woman in Scandinavia."

The project examines how the imagery of ‘The Muslim woman’ is shaped, (re)produced, manifested and  contested in contemporary Scandinavia. The Muslim woman is, and has for a long time been, a symbol used to structure meaning in the public sphere, where the Muslim woman is spoken for and about, as an object for discussion, but Muslim women are rarely talked with on their own terms. The image production of the Muslim woman works through literary, artistic, discursive, visual, and political portrayals, and these manifestations contribute to establish a homogenous and simple figure. The figure is used and developed by both majority and minority communities, and hence the project analyzes the dominating and the marginalized voices.
