New PhD project on relatedness, generations and belonging in diasporic families in Denmark

Nadia Safwat has started a PhD on "The Stories We Inherit: Narrating relatedness, generations and belonging in diasporic families in Denmark."

The project inquires into the relationship between grandchildren (ages 18-25) and grandparents in families with an Arab background in Denmark. Currently the project is broadly shaped through the question: How is relatedness created, sustained or challenged between grandchildren and grandparents? And which role does the sharing or silencing of memory and narratives play in this process? How does knowledge of family histories, or the lack of it, affect both grandchildren and grandparents?

The project combines theoretical inquiries in memory, kinship and migration with methodological interests in arts-based and participatory methods. Nadia hopes to engage multiple generations in a collaborative study of intergenerational ties, memory and family stories, question how generations are used as a cultural resource among both grandchildren and grandparents, and explore the affects, narratives, memories and everyday practices which create or break bonds of relatedness between generations.

Nadia is a visual/multimodal anthropologist at the Department of Anthropology.
