SWAR workshop on Comparative Sectarianism
The workshop will explore whether (the study of) the current Middle Eastern Shia/Sunni sectarianism is similar to/different from (the study of) other forms of sectarianism which have nothing to do with Shia/Sunni-Islam.

Other forms of sectarianism considered include the conflict in Northern Ireland, the Balkans or the European 30 Years War, and Shia/Sunni sectarianism outside of a Middle Eastern context (e.g. South Asia, Europe).
Presentations will reflect on the role of sectarianism both within particular research fields and ‘out there,’ and may also consider whether/how sectarianism has been conceptualized in particular contexts, how sectarianism is expressed by various actors, what the causes of the rising/declining role of sectarianism are, and what the implications of sectarianism are.
