This Thursday we are very happy to welcome the Egyptian film director Hanan Abdalla who will show and discuss her film from 2012, a film portraying the lives of four Egyptian women and their struggle to create a future, awarded at a number of international film festivals, including “Best Documentary” at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival.

Among other things we will talk with Abdalla about the ways in which film might be used as a tool of social and political critique and how it is to work as an activist and a documentary filmmaker during times of revolution and rapid political change.

ABOUT THE FILM
In the wake of the Egyptian revolution, four women speak of their fight for the future and what it means to be a woman in Egypt. In the Shadow of a Man weaves through their worlds as they tell us their stories of marriage, divorce, love and resistance, mirroring their lives with Egypt’s greater struggle for freedom and self-determination.

In the Shadow of a Man premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival 2012, and won the Best Documentary Director's Award at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival. It has since won other awards and travelled to over 30 festivals world-wide, including Montreal World Film Festival, Istanbul International Film Festival, Bergen International Film Festival, and premiered in the UK at the BFI in a sell out screening at the institute's largest screen.
