The workshop will be centered around Jillian Schwedler’s recent book, Protesting Jordan: Geographies of Power and Dissent, which looks at small and large protests in Jordan from before the establishment of the kingdom till today. Jeroen Gunning (King’s College London) and Dima Smaira (the American University Beirut) will subsequently compare insights from Jordan with experiences from Lebanon, Palestine, and Egypt. There will be an additional presentation (online) by Younes Saramifar (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), who will talk about experiences from Iran.

Jillian Schwedler is Professor of Political Science at the City University of New York’s Hunter College and Senior Fellow at the Crown Center at Brandeis University.
