Ricarda Stegmann (postdoc) on "What is Sufi in Neoplatonic Sufism? ‘God’, ‘the world’ and ‘the human being’ in the teachings of Faouzi Skali and Khaled Bentounès."

Faouzi Skali and Khaled Bentounès, two Sufi authorities popular both in French-speaking Europe and North Africa, appeal to Muslims and non-Muslims alike with their teachings. Their conceptions of ‘God’, the ‘cosmos’ and the ‘human being’ are strongly influenced by a Neoplatonic worldview, as it is also received in older Sufi teachings. At the same time, they use the language and topoi of Western esoteric traditions and focus on current individual and social needs. But what is classically Sufi about their ideas and what goes back to other elements of western philosophical and religious history? This presentation introduces the teachings of the two Sufis and asks how the reception of classical teachings is entangled with contemporary esoteric-spiritual conceptions in their works.

In addition to the presentation, there will as usual be introductions, news, and networking.
